I started the show off by selling a piece...the night before...as I was hanging...to Stanley Donwood...the guy who has done ALL of Radiohead's albums since The Bends. Snap!!! Was great to meet the guy, let alone the fact he dug my work. We got to chat for a bit. Really neat dude. And what are the odds he would come in, and I would have several pieces named after Radiohead song titles? Weird.

Encaustics are underway here at Lab L'Chapman...

I've learned already:

1. You can't scratch too deep (ie. Revealing paper on the girl's face).
2. This is incredibly, and almost instantly, gratifying. The results happen right before your eyes.
3. There are so many possibilities, only beginning with encaustics on prints, let alone drawings/paintings/etc.

I've been getting lost (in a good way) in textures and atmosphere for a little while now, and am now getting ready to go deep in the woods with the real thing: encaustics. I had the honor of taking part in a personal demo from encaustic artist and friend Jhina Alvarado. Good things are on the way. In the meantime, I'm doing some oil paint/digital/encaustic experiments which will see some light on this here blog.

i've been exploring mood and atmosphere in some of these last experiments and i'm really enjoying the sense of depth and spacial existence atmosphere creates. i (as you may have noticed) thoroughly enjoy graphic design, and in turn, am incorporating it into my pieces. to me, type/shape relations balance an image.

this was begun a couple days before la dia de los muertos. since then, i've spent about an hour and a half per day finishing it. right now, i'm focusing on ways to preserve the original gestural/expressive qualities of the sketch in the drawing...without making it too sloppy. i really enjoy making it work, or polishing a rough sketch. still an adventure each time, but i like juxtaposing fancy-schmancy photoshop glow to drab pencil drawings.

this squish face is a little doodle from a paused moment in return of the king of mr. samwise sleeping on the steps to mordor. i had no intention of taking this short sketch anywhere, but the skewed anatomy grew on me. i eventually decided i'd let go of the reins this time, to see how tall a cliff off my horses take the carriage. turned out to be pretty fun.

this marks my first abstract commission. this is for one of my buddies, gene, at second life...and he wanted it executed in my favorite format: 12x36. this piece has REALLY opened my eyes, as i've always pushed away abstract art. purely stubborn of me. there are pieces throughout my background that have caught my attention, but still pretty much hit or miss.

these prelims lead up to the final oil-painted piece to be completed over the next week...

i recently finished a nice satire entitled, "survivor" by mr. chuck palahniuk. pretty entertaining, and i highly recommend it.
currently, i'm enjoying naomi klein's "shock doctrine: the rise of disaster capitalism". wow. this book is heavy in it's torture reveling introduction, and that's just the set up for the whole "hurricane katrina, iraq war" types of disaster capitalism. thought i was biting off more than i could chew by reading one of those "political" books. it's nice, and not nearly as wordy as i thought it might've been.

also, later today i'll be in the haight at villains undergoing the first round of cut&paste

the show was a success, and will be part of my annual schedule. i sold the piece an hour after i got there. the producer, irene, told me there are three of these(shows) a year. word!

i had to deal with some family business and wasn't able to finish all i wanted and instead, cleaned the "ya heard" piece: added some more color, made a little more sense of the hair.

i'm working on deepsixpaint.com, and it's print-purchase feature through paypal. i'll let y'all know when it's ready.
in the meantime, "ya heard" can be purchased: $300 mounted/$200 unmounted as an 18"x18" satin paper print. i may have some 24"s in the near future. i know i'll be getting one for the house.

earl grey or long island: you chose;) i hope things are well with everyone, especially now that the countdown has begun until our victor is inaugurated. FTW! someone said this to me the other day, and it really felt good to hear: (he) had never voted in a presidential election and won. i couldn't help but identify with him, as my 26year old demographic has only been able to vote since the 2000 election. satisfaction at last.

politics aside, i've been cooking up some fun designs for the team at store101 again. after seeing the print process of my gorilla design midstage, i saw new directions i wanted to take my own apparel, with graphic shapes. their meaning=nothing. that's the best part. just something to gaze uponst;)

adjustment layers in photoshop(cs3) are nothing short of amazing and efficient. after digging deeper (some might not call this depth) into my favorite app ever, i've fallen in love with these measly malleable measures. the being that is photoshop offers so many answers to any one visual conflict.

they wanted "something dreamy and out of this world" like "escaping from a city". we put together these ideas beginning with mine and the final, transcending both...then their label went under. twas a pleasure working on this project. i'll be pursuing more music related work in the near future.

i just got back to san francisco after an emergency flight back home to virginia on tuesday to see bama for the last time. bama is the name i gave my grandmother as the very first of her grandchildren. uncle jack and i left sfo with our fingers crossed we would make it in time to say goodbye. she held on until thursday morning, without ever waking up, when we got the call she had a rough night. by the grace of her fighting will, she let the family stand by her side as she passed.

big thanks to bags for getting me an editorial gig with imagine fx. this image is part of a two-part series which compares freelancing(the robot in the back) to full time staffing(the tree character opposite the bot). i wasn't terribly happy with this image because of inadequate rendering, in part due to a tight deadline, but... i'm very happy to be doing editorials, finally!... and with imagine fx!

So I checked our mailbox and uponst it was a boxed hardback copy of Spectrum 14 (for free!). I now accept the fact that Macabre(Medusa) made it into Spectrum. I would liked to have gotten a more developed piece in. Although this piece marked the beginning of my digital infancy, I am pumped for it to have still been selected. Getting into this annual topped my list of goals as an artist. I couldn't be happier! Next step: make it into Spectrum 15. Fingers crossed!

last saturday, the show opened up and was a huge success. i decided to do a limited edition of 20 prints of my more popular (it seems) piece, tosca. i dropped tosca off at the gallery on wednesday night, mounted on a pine and masonite box, like i did for my senior thesis. i sold the first print (1 of 20) in the opening hours of the show and have more people interested. it was recommended to me that i put a $400 price tag on each of these prints (signed + numbered). since the first one sold, i figured i should sell the rest at the same price. i believe four more people from the show are purchasing tosca.

I always liked the drawing on the debater piece, but it was my very first assignment I attempted in Photoshop my Junior year and hated the colors. I may have butchered the comp, but the assignment called for a spot illustration... seems a square will fit virtually any layout.

A while back I'd submitted various images to contribute to Ringling's(would be) logo campaign. They've said that the school's logo should be able to represent the students' experiences and additionally, it should be able to cater to any specific function or event at Ringling.
"Silence Falls", my illustration of Alexander Litvinenko was included at the bottom left of this particular logo. Nothing huge, but pretty exciting for me!

After moving out here to San Francisco, I found myself without my studio supplies. Next move: clean up my website, resumé and business card. Also, I have a new logo loosely based on my signature. I cleaned up my font situation from Chromosome to Arial. There are still some alignment issues with text and of course, there needs to be more artwork, but I've been busy freelancing (no complaints here). I've also added captions to the work.
My next personal project will be a continuation of my thesis: The Return of Ulysses.

I was tracking my blog hits and was lead to a Chechen web site where my
illustration of the death of the Russian spy, Alexander Litvinenko is getting some coverage... good or bad coverage, I'm not sure. They've posted the illustration, gave me credit, and linked my blog in their article. I copied the link of the page into Google Translator. It mentions that I've been studying his death and so forth. Pretty neat!

MAX @ Movement Magazine Came Through!!!

I was lucky enough to have been invited to MegaCon last year where a certain Max Michaels (editor/creator) of Movement Magazine did an article about me and my work. I had no idea I was going to be featured... with my name on the front page... next to Billy West. The feature is four pages long with four pieces of my [older] work.
Max has invited me to do a solo show in his new Jacksonville gallery right after graduation in May. Holy crap!

Silence Falls...

This illustration is an editorial about the terrible events which lead to Alexander Litvinenko's death. He was poisoned with Polonium-210, a radioactive isotope. The isotope's radiation can not penetrate skin or paper, but if ingested, Polonium-210 will attack your most sensitive tissue and organs first... it only takes a bit as small as this period. He suffered for almost three weeks in a hospital bed with only the Russian government to accuse. In the meantime, traces of Polonium-210 are popping up around Europe. There are only TWO reactors in the world that are capable of producing the isotope... one is in Canada, the other in Russia. Both claim all of their Polonium is accounted for. The investigation continues...

I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year. 2006... another one gone. My resolution this year is to keep developing my identity as an artist. I've absorbed so much visual information from the past and present. I'm still trying to process all the data that's been stockpiled over the years. This year, my goal is to truely explore "experience", "purpose" and "clarity". "Experience" is life. Life is a stuggle. Life is the common denominator between all of us. There must be a connection between the viewer and the illustration...something memorable.

This is an approach on doing a Constantine comic cover: GARDEN OF EVIL (an imaginary issue). So EVERY SINGLE layer was flattened some how. This is the result. I tried to save it. I orginally wanted it to have a lot more energy. Being the end of the semester, I really don't have the time (right now) to start it over. Maybe during break. We'll see...

An open assignment from Perez landed me here, a project designing album art for a band called Red Sparowes. The CD's titled "At the Soundless Dawn". It's due at the end of class tomorrow around 3:30. Here we go...

From the beginning, I had pictured the final illustration having a busy complexity that was easy to read... with an atmosphere. Through some constructive critiques from Ms. Cady Wachsman and Mr. Erik Jones, I continued exploring ways to unify all the busy elements. As of now (approx. 2:26am EST), I'm content... but we'll see.

I think I'm finally done with this environment. I'm still working on the two supporting images. I'm thinking about approaching the whole project like a sci-fi textbook. The other two images will be "under the microscope" images showing a freaky caterpillar and a close-up of the floating spores as embryos maybe.

This project was our choice. We just had to pick a series of three images (a primary piece with two supporting images). The result I think is interesting...I'm sure I'll revisit it after I give the image a chance to sink in. Enjoy!

Thiel's Latest Assignment...

This illustration is supposed to accompany one of two poems dealing with obesity. I approached it (again) as a cover illustration. I started with a very-close-to-finished drawing of the figure, then scanned it, along with the other elements of the piece. I messed around with color most of the night. Feedback is MUCH appreciated.

This was an assignment given to our Advanced Computer Illustration class. Pick a wine, hot sauce or salad dressing label and redesign a new one (preferably). I was going for an edgier "Artist's Bottle" with some crappy text on the back.

I should've been working on current assignments, but...I printed the first version and it was way too dark with shotty contrast. I gave this version a warmer background to pop the figure out, a cast shadow of the figure onto the background, a figure which isn't so green, a little more red in the fleshtone, a touch more contrast and finally, I pushed the intensity of the light in his mouth and eyes.

Thoughts?
